We all know what todays date is. It may not be on the front burner; in fact, for many of us we try very hard to not even have it on the stove at all. But it is unavoidable. It’s like the countdown to public failure if you are single. Every place you go, every store you visit, it's nothing but red and pink hearts and candy. For everyone in a relationship that celebrates the day, it's about acknowledging the love you have for your partner and spending some well-deserved time together and living like royalty for an evening−or if you’re really lucky, a weekend.

Well I'm all for it; kinda. I mean yes it is great you have someone and yes we should be grateful for all he or she does for and means to us, but what about the rest of the year (minus birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas/Chanukah)? What about us? When do we really celebrate the love we have for ourselves? When is the last time you showed yourself appreciation for all the hard work you do, the tireless nights you put in, the sick children you care for, the midterms you cram for, the business you run?

An hour at yoga? Ten minutes reading before sleep takes you? A grande espresso on your way to work? These are great rewards here and there, but in the grand scheme of things they are not much. Wouldn't it be nice to take the time to love yourself? To say, Hey self, you've busted your butt all week/month/semester, how about some you time? Why don't I take myself out to dinner, take a walk around the pond, or buy that bracelet I've been eyeing because I deserve it?

Everyone should take this Valentine’s Day and make it their own. Say to yourself, I'm single and it's okay, because I love myself. Even if you have a partner or a spouse, say, For Valentine’s Day, I'd like to plan something for myself because it's hard to love others when you forget to love yourself.

I have an abundance of jewelry. You would say of course you, don't you design jewelry? and I would nod and go, Yes, you're right. But when you think about all the things I make - one of a kinds, trial runs, embarrassing rejects - they sneak up on you and accumulate and then suddenly you have a collection. A huge collection. And as silly as it seems, I actually do not have a single solitary good place to put them, to keep them from getting tangled, stretched out, knotted, or tarnished. I am a horrible person. Currently I am debating on which type of holder I should have: a wall holder, a tray, a drawer? The proverbial list goes on and on. So I ask you: Which type of holder do you use for your jewelry? A saucer, ring mandrel, a branch from outside? Did you have it custom designed? Please tell me which works for you and why?

Growing up in the 80's I watched some dated shows like the Brady Bunch, and the Monkeys. Even though these shows were fun, my true heart lied with the black and whites; I couldn't get enough of I Dream of Genie, Donna Reed and even the Patty Duke show. These shows left a mark on me with a sense of tradition I never would have guessed at the time.

Even though these show were about lead female characters getting themselves in to all sorts of trouble they always managed to clean up their messes and have dinner on the table for their counter parts and children. They were women who may have had their social follies for trying too hard or being too smart (for their time) but knew their roll inside and out as gracious hostess. Dinner was on the table piping hot severed on matching plates. The only processed food on the table were the mashed potatoes she slaved over the hot stove mashing . Even if the children drank milk right next to that glass was a second glass full of water.

Where are days of gracious hostesses who always have enough food for the troupe, who make everything from scratch, and whose idea of a great party is serving your guest with a smile and refill. I simply refuse to believe I am the last of dying breed of women too smart for their own good, who couldn't possible fathom the complexities making a box cake when making one from scratch is so incredibly simple.
I get teased quite often from my friends and spouse about my know how in the kitchen, however weather I am hosting a dinner party, or are holding the chair for hospitality at an event my invitations are rarely missed.

Last week I happened to pick up a book I had purchased for my husband. "The Snark A Handbook" by Lawrence Dorfman. While flipping through it I was tickled by a Mark Twain Quote "Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself." so Like many I added it to my Facebook post for the day. I got several chuckles and comments, and a day I felt good about my little snarky comment for the world to read. On Wednesday I flipped through the book again and just so happened to fall for a yet another Mark Twain quote. So instead of quoting him on then I have held off for today another Tuesday. I have decided that this man born Samuel Langhorne Clemens is incredibly interesting, and my Tuesday are just worthy enough in my mind to dedicate some time to him. so without further ado here is today's Twain Quote

I need a creative colonic. I am doing something i haven't done for oh 80lbs. I am going to the gym going to clear my head and come back home to get some work done.

First challenge

Ive just joined a new group from etsy, Aspiring metalsmiths. ANd they are already offering a our first challenge. I need something that is going to push me. Most everything I have accomplished has been at my own pace and erratic notions. so I think this will most definitely be good for me.
I have been eye balling this hollow ring tutorial for a bout 3 weeks, and I am going to to try it. The actual challenge is over the 19th so I need to have it completed and photographed for the 19 so what 10 days? I can do that. I will keep you posted on how things are going. Pictured is the Pyritzed Ammonite for the hollow ring.

I have been floating around aimlessly as of late. Not happy, not miserable just hiding. Hiding in the treasures of Hulu. A wonderful creation where I can distract myself with show after show of imaginary people with their imaginary lives. I love it. I hate it. I am lost.

I have lost my drive. I have no goals. The goals I set for this year have been trumped and twisted. I have had no clear vision of what I want and where I want to go. My 34th birthday is next week, and I have reached the road to ambivalence. I cant think of anything that I might want that doesn't have to do with jewelry or work. Who am I?

Close to home

I have been in the funeral business for ten years come this October. In my line of work I do everything from sitting with the family to doing the actual removal to the actual art of embalming restoration reconstruction down to casketing, cosmetics dressing and scheduling the event itself. My previous supervisors have tried to convince me that I am a sales person; that I am here to sell sell sell. Quite frankly I don't believe that. I am not a sales person. I take personal offense to being called a sales person, and anyone who would awesome this of me I simply dismiss as someone who is not worth my time.

I am an event planner, like wedding I don’t believe one should go into debt this special day. What I do is sit down with my family and talk with them ab0ut their wishes, and help them make this the most beautiful day we can given the circumstances. If they can not afford the bells and whistles I give them assistance on where to get a nice register book, or how to make a photo collage where the best place to get flowers from, so that their services can be within reason.

I take my job to heart because people are in a very vulnerable place in their lives, guilt, depression even peer pressure play a big part in the planning of a funeral. and because of such I have a strict personal rule against working with those I know either through blood or friendship.

Currently have an acquaintance who is suffering the imminent loss of their loved one, and while they are merely seeking advice on planning and guidance, I am greatly unnerved at their request. I will assist them because it is my place, my doing, I fear being looked at like I am Thanatos, the harbinger of death, when in reality I would like to think of myself as guide helping your loved one through their transition as much as I am helping you.

Mistaken Identity

I recently applied to an event in my home town, as was quite excited about catching the deadline right at the last minute. Granted I still have to make it past the jury process, but its always nice to squeeze in right under the cuff.

The evening I applied I was left a very nice voice message explaining to me that I would have to apply as a retail vendor because in order to apply as a crafter I would have had to actually make the jewelry myself not buy it.

I just about died. Well of course I had to laugh and I immediately called and left a message explaining my innocence. Only to follow the call up with an email pleeing my case and a bunch of photos attached of me working in my space. Of course I received an email back that very next morning excusing the confusion, but boy for a hot minute I was panicked.

My husband says that is what happens when you have quality jewelry and a great photographer. The only thing I could say is, I guess so.

New Canopy

I have had my canopy for my 10x10 for about 3 years now. Though it was sturdy and relatively inexpensive it was Blue. Not sky blue not periwinkle blue deep natural shadow blue. Today I have ended the tyranny and finally picked up a new canopy top white in color for only $32 at Walmart. Yeah recession that I am able to afford an new canopy. and saved on shipping by having it shipped to the local store.
I am looking forward to my new friend the white canopy.

City Girls Group

So I joined an awesome group called city girls where friends can get together and do "stuff" Tea parties, drinking, dancing wine tasting and more. Since this taping I have been to a wine tasting event in Napa where we rented a fabulous limo from R&W in Alameda spent the entire day drinking wine and nibbling cheese. FAB-U-Lous. As well as a business networking event. I am very impressed with the ladies, have been in touch with several of the girls and only look forward to meeting more ladies and making the ones I have already become acquainted with even better.Because being beautiful makes you the bad guy.

I have decide to sell my soul, and become a sheep among men, sort to speak. I just recently purchased a blackberry. This purchase allows me to check and respond to client inquiries throughout the day, while I am out of the office. This last weekend I attended a day seminar based around the concept of Self love. A strange notion for someone like me who has always had the believe that I am my own savior. I have never been to a seminar before this day, and I must say I was quite impressed with the quality of ladies who were both guest speakers, and the ladies I had an opportunity to speak with. In many case I learned new things about myself. In some cases I relearned things about me I had forgot.

I wanted to thank Lorena Bathey who coordinated the event. If I may say so was not only quite impressed but very interested in attending next year as well.

Economy Reality

They say in life there are only two certainties. Death and Taxes. While this saying is quite true, even in today's economy one can definitely be affected. Today marks the one week anniversary of me being let go at my funeral home. And while I am not to the one to argue and protest- because I realize I was making more than double of everyone else at my facility. (That's supposed to be the benefit of being dual licensed) what has happened to me has happened to thousands before me.

Corporations have proven time and time again, that they will let go of their higher paid and trained employees, in order to cut costs. I say to them, good look to you and your bottom line, for as far as alignments go with your future, If you are not aligned with me, your most educated and trained employee, then you are not inline with servicing your families. And by your very own efforts your will be your own undoing.

Supporting your artisans in San Francisco

There are fabulous things happening for Artisans in the city of San Francisco. One of them is "Trunk Show Sundays" happening on every Sunday through 2009.

These shows allow your local artisans to have a trunk show in their store. be it clothing, pet toys, jewelry and more to the public. The events are free to the public and are happening at
Indie Industries 218 Columbus Ave from 1-5pm.
I will be joining this fabulous event on March 1st. I certainly expect to see you there supporting your local artisans.

"Be seen"

Be seen. That is my goal for 2009. I worked erratically and frantically in 2008, and though it paid off I am looking at being much more precise and intentional this year. They cant buy your precious gifts if they cant see them. So that's what I am doing. In the last month I have added my to my locations Sahara salon in (Rockridge) Oakland, and Most recently the Nail Mill in Pleasanton. The owner has been very gracious enough to allow me to set up a cabinet and show some items in her nail salon. So on the evening of December 3o, my husband and I took in 30 pieces ranging from $20 to $115.

Saturday, January 3, I get a call from a wonderful woman at the salon who is quite taken with my pieces. We talk a few times that morning on a range of items, mainly regarding taxes, and how she loves my pieces, if she can take all the bags I have out and so forth. One hour later and 3 minutes later I negotiate a $90 discount I manage to make a $575 sale.
Fluke or not I am a definate believer, Be seen.

Taking a moment to reflect on this last year, I wanted to thank everyone for their kind words, support, and constructive criticisms. Villain Accessories is growing. And because of that I feel I too am growing. I wanted to take a minute and thank a few people who have helped me this last year because like many sometimes I forget its good to bitch about the good as well.

I wanted to thank my set designer, roadie, banker, cashier, fashion model, driver, laborer, sales tech, sounding board, and fashion adviser who consequently is also my loving husband of 9 years Steve. With out him, Villain would have never been born, nor survived as long as she has.

I would also like to thank Joshua, for being Steve's stand in; driver, fashion model (small wrists), and box carrier. It's nice to know we have a back up who cares- even more so its nice to know you will suffer the unbearable hours of helping me choose the right gemstones, because you know its important to both, me and Steve.

I would also like to thank every shopper I have ever had, and will have. Your comments inspire me, your sales are appreciated, but the smile you have when your walking by, and your speed down shifts, or when you pick up a piece and tell me "magnificent" If you purchase or not, that is what tells me I am doing good. Thant I am headed in the correct direction.

On November 29th I did something that goes outside my "business plan" I left the bay area, and participated in an event known as HandBorn. 50 designers in 5 different store location in downtown Modesto. Some free food, Drinks, a DJ upstairs in our location the Rage Hair Salon. I'm thinking yeah okay we'll try it. They call it a modern craft bazaar. and I have to tell you ladies and gentleman it is no joke.

At 5:45there were shoppers milling about, at 6pm and the flood gates opened. Men women Couples, girlfriends, parents, co-workers, shit I even saw an police officer shopping on duty. (no names to protect the innocent) this show Rocked.
The atmosphere was a bout fun and shopping ant let me tell you that what these ladies did, that's what their husbands, boyfriends,girlfriends and partners did. in the downward dog position of the economy, Handborn stretched my ass out and made me remember this is supposed to be fun.

Shelter me under thy wings. Lighten my path, direct my steps. Do not leave me, stay quite near me and defend me. But above all come to my help in the struggles of my life.

As a licensed Funeral Director in the state of California, I help people through one of the most horrific experiences of their lives. The loss of a loved one. Through laymen terms and casual conversation people tend to use the term "Closure" when they refer to coming to terms with their loss. I say to have "closure" in dealing with loss is like closing the door on them for eternity.

I personally prefer the term "Acceptance", because in my eyes you over time come to accept that your friend, husband, mother is not coming home. That they are not going to be there when you call, or need to talk in a traditional sense. Which is not an easy reality to come to terms with.

That being said I have created "Hadija", a winged representation of our loved ones who have passed over. Who in my eyes are there to protect and guide us as we carry on.

I name this piece in memory of my best friend Hadija Lorraine Royer.
