7 ways to a hackle free holiday: How to be prepared & actually enjoy your Christmas dinner (Hanukkah , Kwanza, Yule etc etc)
Late last week I sat working on the menu for christmas dinner, I
could feel my hackles literally raising. My husband sensing my mood
shift pats me on the shoulder and says to me ” Don’t worry you’ll figure
it out.” As I begin to slip into crazy patronized wife mode I realized
he’s right, I’m an amazing host, the food is always fabulous, my guests
have fun, & at the end of it all everyone has a good time. I decided
to prepare for this dinner as I would any other. And because I’m so
awesome I’m sharing my 7 entertaining tips to help you survive yours.
1. Be present: This means No distractions. No cells. No TV. No game systems. This is a party: your guest are here for the free food AND the interaction. Which means you need to help them acclimate to the world of human interaction. I use a picnic basket, you can leave it empty or place some colorful fabric in the bottom of it and as you welcome each guest into your home you can collect their phones (remember to have them either turn off of put on vibrate) no exceptions. *Side note if you are serving alcohol you can collect keys as well. Use ziplock bags for keeping them together and labeling.
If the TV is a big draw place a blanket/table cloth over it and place the remote control in a secure location. Set the mood instead with a pre made play list or use my favorite Pandora. Wanna skip the ads pay the $4 for a month it’s no big deal.
And no game systems inform the parents that game systems are great for the ride there and the ride home, but you’ll have some board games available. If they aren’t age appropriate then ask the parents to bring a game (and all its pieces)
2. Food prep: Your meals don’t have to be traditional in any sense, I mean turkey twice a year is way too much in my own opinion. Kick it up a notch, toss in a duck, some lamb chops, talk to your local butcher at least a week to ten days ahead of time and place a special order so that you get exactly what you need. It doesn’t have to be cookie cutter every year. Remember your home is like Olive Garden when you’re here your family. The day of your diner you don’t have to spend the last 10 hours in the kitchen, break it up into the week prior, bake your cookies and toss them in storage containers. Serving ice cream? Pre scoop, toss in container and freeze until ready. Marinade in zip locks, precut veggies and anything else you can think of. Work smart not hard.
3. Plastic: World be damned I know this isn’t very PC and I am not a very PC person, but plastic baby girl. Plates, cups, serving ware, whatever you feel comfortable with. When dinner is done toss it. One less thing to wash. Costco has some lovely faux serving ware. The dollar store has some serious options as well.
4. Presents: I don’t know about you. But I know I’m not part of the 1%. Go with parting gift bags. They can be cute stocking stuffers items, mid ranged in price. (no car keys- unless you got it like that ). The key is to hold strong i.e. only one bag/stocking per last name. Or single sibling. Which means you have my permission to not get your baby brothers girlfriend of the month a gift.
Dont be rude either, add a thank you card, toss in some hard candies, nuts, think of it as stocking hung by the chimney with care. The contents are for each family it represents, let them fight over it. Set a price range $25- to your limit) PLUS added bonus save on additional clean up, have them open their presents at home.
5. Decorations: Good lord function over form people, mind the candles are above little fingers and hair and for the love of Pete go with unscented, nobody really likes frankincense and myrrh. Don’t feel pressured to go over the top. Less really is more. Ditch the fake scents and grab some garland, decorate strategically about your home and let them scent your home naturally. Keep the temperature moderate having both warm drinks and cold drinks to balance your guests out. Use a hurricane to stuff a few bulbs and Christmas lights and voila.
6. Clothing: Be comfortable. Throw on some flats, heels while sexy, will end up kicked off by the time dinner is served, so keep the presentation going by pre selecting your outfit at out before hand. * Side note : Does it fit? Does it need dry cleaning? Is is flattering? Again, less is more in the Jewelry department. A simple necklace, and posts or earrings with backs, I mean why risk loosing half a pair in the mashed potatoes right?
7.Clean up : on isle 7. I keep a spill bucket on the ready out of sight but near by traffic areas, paper towels, towels, various cleaners. Got a beautiful new carpet? Why not buy a cheap rug to go under the dinning table? For drinks go with clear, white tea, seven up, white wine.
My old embalming teacher, had a saying that I live by to this day. “Maximum precaution equals minimum procedure.” Take the time, plan ahead and you’ll see that entertaining your loved and not so loved ones doesn’t have to be a hair raising event.
All in all I hope my words of wisdom have brought you closer to sanity and happiness as you celebrate the holidays with your kin folk.

Vampires Diaries and Villain Accesories unite.
images from CW
If you’re a crazy vampire fan like me you’ve seen all the TV shows including the latest and greatest entangled vampire saga to hit the CW The Vampire Diaries. I’ll be honest I resisted with all my might, but when you have a beautiful cast, two of the sexiest brothers to hit prime time and an amazing ensemble of costuming you soon find resistance is futile.
Fast forward three tantalizing seasons & you’ll find the costuming continues to fascinate as these characters go into their senior year. I’m excited to share with you that as these characters continue to grow and face the big Bads of Mystic Falls, that Villains Accessories Drop bracelet has been picked by the fabulous Leigh Leverett THE costume designer for Vampire Diaries to be used on the show, thanks to my kick ass association to the Artisan group.
The only question left is what amazing character will be dawning my oxidized drop bracelet. Bonnie with her edgy Witchy ways? Caroline with her compassionate vampire empathy? The possibilities are endless. I promise you one thing though. When I know you’ll know.

Twain Tuesday
It's Twain Tuesday again. This weeks quote is especially meaningful for me as I have been working on allowing myself to feel more ownership and pride in my art. It is amazing to me how incredibly talented a person can be; that I can be, and yet I/we/they still find it difficult to allow ourselves to feel the actual joy our work gives us.
With some self reflection and Mark Twain on my side, I now see things very differently. This truth has made a serious dent in a lifetime needless self denial. It is my hope that by sharing Twain with you, he may shine a light in your direction. So without further delay here is your Twain Tuesday quote of the day.
"A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval."
-Mark Twain

& Friends

Having participated in the San Francisco International Gift fair for a couple years now I have had the pleasure to meet work with some wonderful neighbors. Janice from Tres Spa has some amazing spa products. In fact I simply can not live with out her Defiance face cream.
One neighbor with whom I had traded several conversations, snacks and laughs with were Steve and Christine of Whales and Friends of Alameda. Where they offer an eclectic mix of hand crafted jewelry, fabulous French clothes, educational toys, books, cards, wind chimes, artisan glass, and now Villain Accessories jewelry.
Like them on Facebook. Shop local.

Video is the wave of the future
In the middle of the San Francisco International Gift Fair I was fortunate enough to meet Heidi. Her enthusiasm about Villain Accessories was so incredibly intoxicating that in the middle of our transaction I decided to ask her if I could catch her energy on video. Note her wearing Stellar.

Life happens when you venture into the city.

Last week was very exciting for me. Not only did I get to see president Obama's motorcade zip past the Moscone center in San Francisco, I was also featured on Fox Online Small business of the Day. Check it out.

Loving yourself
We all know what todays date is. It may not be on the front burner; in fact, for many of us we try very hard to not even have it on the stove at all. But it is unavoidable. It’s like the countdown to public failure if you are single. Every place you go, every store you visit, it's nothing but red and pink hearts and candy. For everyone in a relationship that celebrates the day, it's about acknowledging the love you have for your partner and spending some well-deserved time together and living like royalty for an evening−or if you’re really lucky, a weekend.
Well I'm all for it; kinda. I mean yes it is great you have someone and yes we should be grateful for all he or she does for and means to us, but what about the rest of the year (minus birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas/Chanukah)? What about us? When do we really celebrate the love we have for ourselves? When is the last time you showed yourself appreciation for all the hard work you do, the tireless nights you put in, the sick children you care for, the midterms you cram for, the business you run?
An hour at yoga? Ten minutes reading before sleep takes you? A grande espresso on your way to work? These are great rewards here and there, but in the grand scheme of things they are not much. Wouldn't it be nice to take the time to love yourself? To say, Hey self, you've busted your butt all week/month/semester, how about some you time? Why don't I take myself out to dinner, take a walk around the pond, or buy that bracelet I've been eyeing because I deserve it?
Everyone should take this Valentine’s Day and make it their own. Say to yourself, I'm single and it's okay, because I love myself. Even if you have a partner or a spouse, say, For Valentine’s Day, I'd like to plan something for myself because it's hard to love others when you forget to love yourself.

Form and Function
I have an abundance of jewelry. You would say of course you, don't you
design jewelry? and I would nod and go, Yes, you're right. But when you
think about all the things I make - one of a kinds, trial
runs, embarrassing rejects - they sneak up on you and accumulate and
then suddenly you have a collection. A huge collection. And as silly as
it seems, I actually do not have a single solitary good place to put
them, to keep them from getting tangled, stretched out, knotted, or
tarnished. I am a horrible person. Currently I am debating on which
type of holder I should have: a wall holder, a tray, a drawer? The
proverbial list goes on and on. So I ask you: Which type of holder do
you use for your jewelry? A saucer, ring mandrel, a branch from outside?
Did you have it custom designed? Please tell me which works for you and
why?

Great oppourtunities
Quite recently Villain Accessories had been chosen to present actress Ginnifer Goodwin with one of my pieces. I took this opportunity to create something special for her as she is of Jewish faith. "Hanukkiah" is the grand result. White Sapphires set in 14karat gold, with 14karat gold ear wires and sterling silver body.

Being Gracious
Growing up in the 80's I watched some dated shows like the Brady Bunch, and the Monkeys. Even though these shows were fun, my true heart lied with the black and whites; I couldn't get enough of I Dream of Genie, Donna Reed and even the Patty Duke show. These shows left a mark on me with a sense of tradition I never would have guessed at the time.
Even though these show were about lead female characters getting themselves in to all sorts of trouble they always managed to clean up their messes and have dinner on the table for their counter parts and children. They were women who may have had their social follies for trying too hard or being too smart (for their time) but knew their roll inside and out as gracious hostess. Dinner was on the table piping hot severed on matching plates. The only processed food on the table were the mashed potatoes she slaved over the hot stove mashing . Even if the children drank milk right next to that glass was a second glass full of water.
Where are days of gracious hostesses who always have enough food for the troupe, who make everything from scratch, and whose idea of a great party is serving your guest with a smile and refill. I simply refuse to believe I am the last of dying breed of women too smart for their own good, who couldn't possible fathom the complexities making a box cake when making one from scratch is so incredibly simple.
I get teased quite often from my friends and spouse about my know how in the kitchen, however weather I am hosting a dinner party, or are holding the chair for hospitality at an event my invitations are rarely missed.

Twain Tuesdays
Last week I happened to pick up a book I had purchased for my husband. "The Snark A Handbook" by Lawrence Dorfman. While flipping through it I was tickled by a Mark Twain Quote "Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself." so Like many I added it to my Facebook post for the day. I got several chuckles and comments, and a day I felt good about my little snarky comment for the world to read. On Wednesday I flipped through the book again and just so happened to fall for a yet another Mark Twain quote. So instead of quoting him on then I have held off for today another Tuesday. I have decided that this man born Samuel Langhorne Clemens is incredibly interesting, and my Tuesday are just worthy enough in my mind to dedicate some time to him. so without further ado here is today's Twain Quote
""Loyalty to country ALWAYS. Loyalty to government, when it deserves it."
— Mark Twain
Because being beautiful makes you the bad guy.

I feel like Sarah Barellis
I have been asked to write a love song and I don't want to but i have to in order to make this album or in my case business fly. I have been a very busy bee and IN January I will be participating in the San Francisco International Gift Show Booth #930.
I need a creative colonic. I am doing something i haven't done for oh 80lbs. I am going to the gym going to clear my head and come back home to get some work done.
Some orders to finish up and then some designs to be making.

Only October
For some they can say it is Only October. For others like myself I say Good gravy January is upon me. Not only have I decided to participate in the San Francisco International Gift Fair in January I have also been chosen to participate at the San Francisco Yoga Journal Convention. Both of which are major shows for me. I am excited an terrified but one can not live with fear. So for now I design and create and improve.
